Luchando por la vida siempre en colectiva

(Fighting for life, always together) Raising their fists in the air... To the sound of their voices, the hand drum, and the banging of pots and pans, the purple tide raises its will. These images reflect this aspect of Colectiva Feminista en Construcción’s work. Sheltered by the large foliage of the yellow trumpet tree, which echoes with one of their slogans, “we will burn the sky,” while the struggle continues to take root. This is how they have contributed to the feminist struggle in Puerto Rico.

Collaboration with Colectiva Feminista en Construcción

This project established a collaboration with Puerto Rican activist group Colectiva Feminista en Construcción. Within the resistance movements in Puerto Rico, La Cole, is a political organization that builds on the legacy of black and decolonial feminism. La Cole has been instrumental in the development of social movements in Puerto Rico that address structural violence from an intersectional lens. On the other hand, Moriviví and La Cole were founded very close to each other, in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Over the years, we have met and coincided in different spaces. Therefore, this direct collaboration also stems from nurturing and enriching the ties between both collectives.

This project consists of two murals installed on La Cole’s new and permanent headquarters.  The murals build on archive and memory by identifying and weaving symbols of feminist resistance claiming the streets. They also bring special attention to capturing important moments, events, and achievements of La Cole, which women and people in Puerto Rico have experienced. The project incorporated members of La Cole in community workshops facilitated by Colectivo Moriviví. Through brainstorming and group discussion, the construction of this visual imagery was articulated.  We also held community paint parties, where both members of La Cole, and of the broader geographical community participated.

The mural's highlights feature the carolazo (banging of pots), the megaphone and the pandero (hand drum) as symbols of raising our voices and claiming the streets.  Colectiva Feminista’s work has been pivotal to developing and strengthening these practices on Puerto Rico’s protests and manifestations.  The mural also accents the use of protest signs and slogans, identifying some of the most iconic that La Cole has created and promoted.  Finally, we can also distinguish some natural elements. Such as bees and bumblebees that were incorporated to the design, alluding to working and building what our community needs.  There is also the trumpet tree (Roble plateado, tabebuia chrysis) and its flowers, that connect to the geographical location of Robles St, but also suggest strength and resilience being a strong tree of noble wood.

La Cole has always been out on the streets, through its militant activism, fighting for all of us. In light of the recent harassment and intimidation by local and federal authorities, us in Colectivo Moriviví express our complete solidarity and support for them.  Such events make us believe it is even more important to highlight their pivotal work. We believe wholeheartedly in this fight and we plant our little seed so that it remains in the collective memory of our people.

Community Workshops

The project incorporated members of La Cole in community workshops facilitated by Colectivo Moriviví. Through brainstorming and group discussion, the construction of this visual imagery was articulated.

Community Painting

Community painting sessions were hosted with La Cole's new headquarters.  They painted following a color map and numbers over polytab pieces.
