“Te creemos”: la poderosa afirmación contra la violencia machista hecha mural en la UPR

Anyone who passes through the Placita de los Vientos of the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) will be able to read an accompanying affirmation for survivors of gender-based violence: “We believe you.”
The message is part of a mural that, from this Tuesday, shines in the lobby of the Beatriz Lassalle Graduate School of Social Work in the Faculty of Social Sciences. It is the result of a collaboration between the SIEMPRE VIVAS Metro interfaculty project and the Moriviví art collective and is an example of how art serves to accompany, unify, and encourage the university community. With the purpose of empowering student survivors of gender-based violence and affirming that university spaces must be safe, the Siempre Vivas Metro organization joined Colectivo Moriviví to create murals on two columns in the lobby of the Beatriz Lassalle Graduate School of Social Work, from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in Río Piedras.
"Apart from retaking university spaces through visual identity, it is telling survivors of gender-based violence that we are here, that we believe in them and are here to help them in everything they need," said Ana Victoria Rodríguez Vázquez, a student Social Work graduate, leaving the Siempre Vivas conversation to discuss the process behind artistic and community work.
